This short article is an introduction to security issues for public
wireless networks, which may include threats to things like financial
data, personal information, and civic applications (e.g. e-voting).
Municipalities must both secure city-operated applications and consider
their role in protecting residents and businesses that use public
broadband for Internet access. Strategies for addressing these two
areas of responsibility may differ. In any case, municipalities should
address the balance between network openess (an important feature of
public networks) and security concerns in their RFP.
